Twin Charlotte, Charlotte NC's best transmission repair shop, explains common transmission problems and symptoms with the Toyota Camry:Not every Toyota Camry transmission problem requires complete rebuilding or replacement. For Toyota Camry’s equipped with an automatic transmission, transmission problems usually occur between the reverse and drive gears, whereas in manual Toyota Camry transmissions, the problem occurs between the second and third gears or the first and second gears. These are common problems that would be cause for a transmission repair or transmission rebuild.
Here are five common transmission problems and transmission repair for the Toyota Camry:
1) Fluid Problems - Gears Slipping or Slow to Engage
The most common transmission problem is low fluid. This can be the result of a leak. If low fluid is the problem, all the seals, namely the driveshaft seal, the transmission gasket seal and the input seal, should be checked. If any of them are found to be faulty, they should be replaced. If none of the seals are faulty, the ATF (automatic transmission fluid) in the coolant of the radiator should be checked. A problem in the ATF (automatic transmission fluid) can cause the fluids to become contaminated. The symptoms of low fluid include gears that slip or are slow to engage between shifts.
2) Solenoid Problems - Gears slipping or shifting slowly
The solenoid is responsible for controlling the flow of the fluid through the transmission. A faulty solenoid can result in transmission problems as there is a lack of proper fluid regulation. If less fluid is allowed to flow through the transmission the gears may slip or shift slowly. If there are symptoms of low fluid but no evidence of fluid leaks, the solenoid should be checked.
3) Torque Converter - Griding sounds
The needle bearings of the torque converter in the transmission system can get worn out. Symptoms of damage to the torque converter are an odd grinding sound when the car is in gear. The car should be serviced immediately if damage to the torque converter is causing the transmission problems.
4) The Clutch - Car is Overheating, Shaking, Gears fail to engage
The clutch within the torque converter can also jam causing transmission problems. The symptoms if the clutch is jammed are similar to those for low fluid. However, if the clutch is at fault, there is more than enough fluid in the transmission. This problem causes shaking of the car and overheating of the engine as well as, the gears slipping or failing to engage. If the clutch is the reason for the transmission problem, the car should be serviced immediately.
5) Universal Joint - Gearshift fails to engage, squeaks while idle
A defective universal joint can interfere with the power reaching the drive wheels. The transmission mounts can get damaged and as a result the gearshift would fail to engage correctly. This is signaled by a squeaking sound when the car is idled.
Besides, the causes mentioned above, mechanical problems in other parts of the drive train can also cause transmission problems.
