When you come to a stop in your vehicle, drivers with manual transmissions use a clutch to disconnect the engine from the transmission so your engine can continue to spin while your wheels do not. Drivers with automatic transmissions don't have a clutch and instead rely upon the torque converter to perform the same task.

A torque converter is a type of fluid coupling, which allows the engine to spin somewhat independently of the transmission. If the engine is turning slowly, such as when the car is idling at a stoplight, the amount of torque passed through the torque converter is very small, so keeping the car still requires only a light pressure on the brake pedal.

Essentially, when the torque converter fails your car isn't going anywhere.

Automatic Transmission Problems, Symptoms

The automatic transmission is one of the most complicated and thus one of the less reliable parts of the vehicle. Although transmissions are more reliable today than ever before, this is the most neglected part of an automobile.

Automatic transmission problems can make your car unsafe - some transmission defects may cause, for example, that the car can roll with the shifter in Park or drive forward with shifter in Neutral.

The most common failure mechanism of automatic transmissions is due to overheating. When the transmission is heavily worked, such as towing a load heavier than the car is designed for, the transmission fluid heats up considerably. Excessive heat causes the fluid to burn, and therefore, lose its lubricity characteristics. As the transmission fluid burns, it becomes oxidized leaving deposits all over inside of the automatic transmission. Exposed to the heat the rubber seals and gaskets inside the transmission become hardened causing leaks. The metal parts warp and lose their strength. All this, sooner or later, results in transmission failure.

Many modern transmissions use an oil cooler either within, or next to, the car’s radiator to keep the fluid cool, much like the radiator maintains the coolant temperature.

Fluid leaks are often the first sign of trouble with an automatic transmission. If ever fluid is detected on the ground where the car is normally parked, it should be checked out immediately to avoid bigger problems.

Delayed shifts, or jerky shifts, are indications there is a problem with the automatic transmission. A delay of more than a second or two when shifting from park to either drive or reverse, is a symptom of slipping bands or clutches within the automatic transmission. These problems are less expensive to repair when diagnosed early, versus after the transmission has failed completely.

Performing a routine automatic transmission maintenance schedule, and the ability to recognize potential problems, will prevent expensive repairs.

• Service Light - The service light on the dashboard could indicate that the transmission is working too hard and is overheating. This may be due to a more serious problem with the transmission. 'Slippage'

The Honda Odyssey is a minivan manufactured by Japanese automaker Honda since 1994, marketed worldwide, and now in its third (North America) and fourth generations (Japan). When your transmission goes bad, you have two options. First option is to give the transmission to your dealer and a get a refurbished (remanufactured) transmission in return. Second option is to get your transmission repaired (it would be taken apart and the defective parts repaired/replaced). This is called transmission rebuild or rebuilt transmission.

A transmission rebuild is a major mechanical overhaul done to a vehicle's transmission. A transmission, like a vehicle engine, is made up of a series of interrelated mechanical parts that wear out over time and with extended use. Rebuilding a vehicle's transmission replaces these worn parts without replacing the entire transmission.

A rebuilt transmission is a popular option for those wishing to avoid paying the relatively high cost of replacing a vehicle's damaged or worn-out transmission with a new one. Brand new transmissions, especially on more modern, late model cars, can be almost as expensive as a brand new engine. Many people, especially those on a tighter budget or those simply wishing to avoid paying the full price of a brand new vehicle transmission, will opt for a transmission rebuild. Many people are under the misconception that a transmission rebuild does exactly that. It doesn't. A vehicle with a rebuilt transmission may run as good as new, but its transmission will still have transmission parts with wear on them. The parts that were damaged and/or severely worn were replaced during the transmission rebuild, but the remaining parts - the parts with some wear - are still in place and likely to wear out with time.

When Should I Change My Oil?

The 3000 mile Oil Change rule - Myth?

A new article was recently posted on yahoo.com talking about Oil Changes. Every car owner knows that eventually, you do need to change the oil in your car. Failure to change the oil instantly puts you at a very high risk to damage your car.

“There was a time when the 3,000 miles was a good guideline,” said Philip Reed, senior consumer advice editor for the car site Edmunds.com. “But it’s no longer true for any car bought in the last seven or eight years.”
Oil chemistry and engine technology have improved to the point that most cars can go several thousand more miles before changing the oil, Mr. Reed said. A better average, he said, would be 7,500 between oil changes, and sometimes up to 10,000 miles or more.

And, this isn't the first time this news has hit the markets. Several years ago the Callifornia Integrated Waste Management Board ran public service annoucements about the 3000 mile oil change myth. Their concern is not only the cost to drivers, but the environmental impact of throwing away good oil.

The 3000 mile oil change rule is a great rule of thumb if you are constantly driving in city and have many stop and goes, but if you are constantly driving longer distances, you may not need to change your oil as frequenty. The best recommendation is to always check your cars user manual. The manual is specific to your vehicle and will tell you exactly when it is suggested to change your oil.

The point of engine oil is primarily to stop all the metal surfaces in your engine from grinding together and tearing themselves apart from friction whilst transferring heat away from the combustion cycle. Engine oil must also be able to hold all the nasty by-products of combustion, such as silica (silicon oxide) and acids in suspension. It cleans the engine of these chemicals and build-ups, and keeps the moving parts coated in oil. Finally, engine oil minimises the exposure to oxygen and thus oxidation at higher temperatures. It does all of these things under tremendous heat and pressure.

Some say that lemon protection says do not let the oil go over 5,000 mile before the change. Changing the oil after that time may be asking for trouble, as it may cause premature engine wear in turn causing it to need replacement sooner. Example: If you have a rebuilt engine with oil that has been changed at 7,500 miles, around 120,000 the engine may be in need of an overhaul solely because of excessive clearances caused by dirty oil.

What Happens if You Decide Not To Change Your Oil As Needed?
- It can cause sludge buildup in the ring grooves and all over the inside of the engine.
- It can cause excessive piston ring wear
- It can cause excessive wear to the rod and main bearings
- It can cause pitting and wear to the cam and lifters
- It can cause premature failure of the engine.

Pay Attention to the Hints from Your Car.

When people get sick, we understand that our bodies are trying to tell us that something is wrong. And so we either go to the doctor, or to the drug store to get medicine for ourselves. 1) Leaking Fluid
Leaking transmission fluid is probably one of the easiest ways to identify that your transmission needs attention. Automatic transmission fluid is vital to your car's shifting capabilities, so a little fluid on your driveway can quickly turn into a major problem. Automatic transmission fluid is bright red, clear and a little sweet-smelling when everything's working correctly. When you check your automatic transmission fluid, make sure it's not a dark color and that it doesn't have a burnt smell. If it is, you'll need to take it to a mechanic and have it replaced. Unlike your car's motor oil, the transmission doesn't really consume or burn up any fluid during use, so if you notice you're running low on fluid, then it's definitely leaking out somewhere.

2) Check Engine Light
The check engine light can be a great early indicator that something is starting to go wrong with your transmission. The check engine light can come on for any number of reasons not related to your transmission as well, but don't overlook this clear warning sign.
In newer cars there are sensors throughout the engine that pick-up irregularities in the engine and notify the computer that there's something wrong in a particular area. In the case of transmissions, these sensors can pick up vibrations and early problems that you may not even be able to feel or see. If you want to know if your check engine light is telling you about a transmission problem, you can purchase a diagnostic scan tool that you plug into your car underneath the driver's side of the instrument panel. The scan tool will display a code that corresponds to the area of the vehicle causing the fault. If the code tells you there's a transmission problem, well, that's a good time to see your mechanic.

3) Grinding or Shaking
Depending on whether you have a manual or automatic transmission, your car may respond differently when your transmission isn't working correctly. With a manual transmission, a common sign of trouble is a grinding sound or feeling when you shift into a new gear. If you fully engage the clutch, shift and then hear a grinding sound, you may have a worn clutch or you may just need to have it adjusted. Or perhaps one or more of your transmission's gear synchronizers, or synchros, is worn out or damaged. It's possible that the shift linkage may need to be adjusted as well. Grinding gears can be caused by a number of different factors.
For automatic transmissions problems, you'll most likely feel the car shimmy into each gear rather than the typical almost unnoticeable shifts, or the transmission will make a jarring transition into the next gear. Both are signs that your transmission needs attention. If you notice anything other than a smooth transition between gears, then you might need to have your automatic transmission looked at for adjustments or repair.

2) Whining, Clunking and Humming
It's difficult to nail down exactly how your car may sound if there's transmission trouble, but one thing's pretty certain, you'll probably get a that-doesn't-sound-right feeling when you hear it. Every car is built differently, so the sounds they produce can vary greatly, but if you have an automatic transmission, there's a good chance you may hear a whining, humming or even a slight buzzing sound.
With manual transmissions, the sounds will usually come across as a bit more abrupt and mechanical sounding. If you shift gears and hear a clunking sound, then you definitely need to have it checked out by a professional. But a clunking sound from underneath your vehicle may not always point to a transmission problem. Your constant velocity joints (CV joints), or even your differential may be the culprit.
The sounds you hear may happen from time to time at first, but if you neglect the noises, they'll occur more frequently as time goes on.

5) Lack of Response
Transmissions are designed to go into the correct gear every time, so when they hesitate or refuse to go, it's a sure sign there's something wrong. With manual transmission problems, you may notice after shifting into a gear that the car's engine will rev up, but the car won't be moving as quickly as the engine is running. In this case, a worn out clutch or more serious transmission problem may be occurring. It's also possible for the stick shift to pop out of gear and back into neutral if the shift linkage is out of adjustment.
Automatic transmissions have the same lack-of-response problem, but will usually manifest the issue while engaging the "Park" or "Drive" selection. The car should shift quickly into either of these modes, but if your transmission hesitates to go into either one, then it's likely there's an issue with the transmission.

Have you ever seen inside a transmission? Or what a transmission looks like when its outside of your car?

Its okay...Most people haven't.
Most people also do not know that one transmission has hundreds of parts including gears, bolts---and well, just take a look at the photos and see for yourself!

The first photo shows what a transmission looks like when it is first taken out of your car. If you have a transmission problem and need it rebuild or parts replaced, I bet you never thought about how difficult it is to really take apart this one item. This one part is filled with hundreds of other parts. All of these parts work together in perfect harmony until something--anything goes wrong.

When a transmission needs to be rebuilt, every part inside the transmission is taken out, the whole unit is disassembled, reusable parts are cleaned, broken parts will be replaced with new parts, and then everything is put back together.

After the transmission has been completely disassembled, parts cleaned, parts replaced---it is then ready to be reassembled.
